Review: Koalture’s Activated Charcoal Face and Body scrub

Koalture Activated Charcoal

Port Harcourt based skin care line Koalture sent me a package which included their Activated Charcoal face and body scrub about 6 weeks ago and I must confess, this is one product that I have not stopped using!

A little about Activated Charcoal

Activated charcoal is the latest ‘detox’ trend. It’s typically made from carbon-containing material, like wood, that is heated at high temperatures to create charcoal, then oxidised – a process known as “activation”.

Activated charcoal has lots of small holes in its surface, increasing its surface area and making it more porous. It’s this sponge-like property that allows activated charcoal to soak up a variety of chemicals and it’s why you may see it used in filtration products, including water filters (Source: BBC Good Food).

It is claimed to have many health benefits which include the treatment of alcohol and other poisoning, teeth whitening, treatment of skin conditions like hyper pigmentation, water filtration, emergency toxin removal, reducing high cholesterol amongst others.

Koalture’s Activated Charcoal Face and Body Scrub

The Koalture Activated Charcoal face and body scrub comes in 150g plastic jar and is hand made of activated charcoal, frankincense oil, coconut oil, moringa, bentonite clay, sugar, sea salt, lemon zest and fragrance oil. All these ingredients are what got me excited about using this product as I was desperate to find something to help stop hyper pigmentation and those nasty little ingrown hair bumps.

It smells a lot like clay mixed with coconut oil but is not over powering. It feels a little coarse to touch so I mix it with a little water and it works perfect for me.

Koalture Activated Charcoal

I have been using Koalture’s Activated charcoal scrub 3 times a week for about 5 weeks now and  I must say that this product really has helped improve my skin texture and hyperpigmentation. After mixing about half my palm worth of the scrub with a little water, I rub it in a circular motion for about 2 minutes and then leave the scrub on my body for about 7 – 10 minutes and rinse off. It leaves a little black layer on my skin which is why I always take a shower after scrubbing. It does get a little messy but the mixture washes off easily with soap and water. It leaves my skin smooth with a little hint of moisture from the oils (which I love because my skin does get a little dry).

Koalture Activated Charcoal

StyleMeAfrica Rating: 4/5. I would recommend this scrub to any woman who wants to fight hyper pigmentation and ingrown hair bumps.
