#SMAFood: The Kachumbari (Kenyan Fresh Tomato and Onion Salad) Recipe You Need To Try!

Kachumbari is an East African tomato and onion salad eaten in mainly Kenya but also prevalent in the neighboring countries like Tanzania, Uganda, and Zanzibar. It makes good for a perfect summer side dish to pair with your grilled meats.

  • 2 tomatoes diced
  • 1/2 large red onion diced
  • 1-2 jalapeños seeded, diced
  • 1 medium cucumber diced
  • 1-2 garlic minced
  • Juice from 1 lime
  • Chopped fresh cilantro or parsley
  • Salt and black pepper to taste


  • 2 Beef tomatoes thickly sliced
  • 1-2 Avocadoes mashed add lime to retain color


  • 1 garlic clove minced
  • ¼ cup olive oil
  • 2 tablespoon fresh squeezed lemon juice
  • 2 tablespoon balsamic vinegar
  • 1 tablespoon honey
  • 2 tablespoon chopped fresh parsley and basil
  • Salt and fresh ground black pepper to taste


  1. Combine ingredients; tomatoes, onion, cucumber, jalapeno, lime, and herbs. Season with salt and pepper
  2. Dressing
  3. Combine garlic, lemon juice, balsamic vinegar, olive oil, honey, salt pepper, herbs in a blender or screw-top jar and shake or process until well blended. Serve to dress with salad
  4. Place beef tomatoes on a plate spread mashed avocado on tomatoes then top with kachumbari,
  5. If desired add more dressing
